Jim Bednar

Solutions Architect, Continuum Analytics, @JamesABednar

Dr. Jim Bednar is a Solutions Architect at Continuum Analytics. He is also an Honorary Fellow in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Bednar holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas, along with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Philosophy. He has published more than 50 papers and books about the visual system and about software development. Dr. Bednar manages the open source Python projects HoloViews, ImagGen, Param, and Datashader. Before Continuum, Dr. Bednar was a lecturer and ressearcher in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as a software and hardware engineer at National Instruments.

Blake Borgeson

Blake Borgeson

Co-Founder and CTO, Recursion Pharmaceuticals

Blake earned a BS in electrical engineering from Rice University. He followed it with a year researching and building real-time navigation software for surgical procedures at the M.E.Mueller Institute in Bern, Switzerland. In 2005, he co-founded an e-commerce company, BuildASign.com, which currently employs over 350 in Austin and brought in over $80 million in revenue in 2015. After moving to an advisory role in the business, Blake completed a PhD in bioinformatics at UT Austin in the Marcotte Lab, using machine learning to exploit new experimental techniques in rapidly mapping protein complexes. He loves sunshine, mountains, and snow.

Joe is a Senior Software Engineer in IBM's z Systems organization. He leads the development team responsible for the ecosystem of packages that drive analytics workloads on mainframe platforms. He is a big fan of Python and Jupyter, and is very interested in working at the intersection of data science and enterprise data management.

Armin Burgmeier

Armin Burgmeier

Senior Software Engineer, Bloomberg

Armin has a Ph.D. in High Energy Physics where he specialized in analysis of data from the CERN Large Hadron Collider. With the Higgs Boson eventually found, he joined Bloomberg L.P. in 2015 where he is building out infrastructure for data science teams within the company. When he is not writing code for his employer or an open source project, Armin is likely on a trail, riding his bike, or flying a helicopter.

Michele Chambers is an entrepreneurial executive with over 25 years of industry experience. She has authored two books; Big Data Big Analytics, published by Wiley, and Modern Analytic Methodologies, published by Pearson FT Press. Prior to Continuum Analytics, Michele held executive leadership roles at database and analytic companies, IBM, Netezza, Revolution Analytics, MemSQL and RapidMiner. In her career, Michele has been responsible for strategy, sales, marketing, product management, channels and business development.

Charles Collver

Charles Collver

Financial Economist, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

Dr. Charles Collver is a financial economist and quantitative data analyst in the Office of Analytics and Research within the Division of Trading and Markets at the US Securities and Exchange Commission. He works with the MIDAS data and analytics system – a collection of order and trade messages from each equity exchange and SIP/OPRA top-of-book and trade data from the equity and options markets. His work includes metric design and selection, algorithm development, data wrangling and visualization. He contributes to the online SEC Market Structure content including: the design and development and maintenance of the equity market structure metrics, such as order volume measures, cancel-to-trade ratios, hidden trade and odd-lot trade rates, and, order, cancel and trade durations. He has authored or coauthored the Data Highlights featured on the SEC website, including studies of cancel and trade durations, hidden rates, essential exchange data feed details and a timely study of odd-lot rates following the rule mandating the printing of odd-lot trades to the tape. When he is not working with market structure data he likes to develop agent-based models of modern order-driven exchanges.

Jonathan Cornelissen is a co-founder and the CEO of DataCamp. He’s interested in everything related to data science, education, and entrepreneurship. He holds a Ph.D. in financial econometrics, during which he got involved in building open-source software for quant finance. DataCamp is the second education startup he founded, and the first one that went international. DataCamp now teaches data science to over 700,000 students worldwide and has partnered with companies like RStudio and Continuum Analytics to build out its course library.

Christine Doig is a Senior Data Scientist at Continuum Analytics, where she worked on MEMEX, a DARPA-funded project helping stop human trafficking. She has 5+ years of experience in analytics, operations research, and machine learning in a variety of industries, including energy, manufacturing, and banking. Christine holds a M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona. She is an open source advocate and has spoken at PyData, EuroPython, SciPy, PyCon, and many other conferences.

Kale Franz is the lead developer for the conda project. He received an undergraduate degree in physics from the Colorado School of Mines and a PhD in electrical engineering from Princeton University. Kale is a domain expert in the field of quantum cascade lasers, and made infrared semiconductor lasers for the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory immediately after graduate school. Before joining Continuum to lead conda development, Kale was a backend developer and DevOps tech lead at 23andMe

Brian is a VP and Principle Analyst at Forrester Research where he covers big data, analytics architecture, data management, and strategy. He also leads the emerging technology and technology innovation research teams. His research provides practical advice to architects and technology strategists seeking to embrace the business technology (BT) agenda. Brian authors key Forrester reports on technology trends for Enterprise Architecture Professionals. He has helped numerous clients develop their technology watchlists, evolve their architecture practices, and develop strategic approaches to hot topics like big data, business intelligence, and data management. Brian holds an electrical engineering degree from Texas A&M.

Matthew Jensen is the founder and managing director of the Open-Source Policy Center (OSPC) at the American Enterprise Institute. The center is dedicated to making policy analysis transparent and accessible through open source computer modeling.OSPC products include the TaxBrain web application, which allows policymakers, the media, and the public to have access to tax policy calculations and analyses. Mr. Jensen is also a core contributor to open source modeling projects including Tax-Calculator and TaxData.

Eric is one of the pioneers of probabilistic programming and built a lucrative enterprise, Prior Knowledge, focused on cloud technology that was sold to Salesforce. Girish holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University (2013) focusing on stochastics and optimization and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from R.I.T. (1998) focusing on chaotic dynamical systems. He loves long-distance running, playing competitive tennis and following English Premier League soccer.

Travis has worked extensively with Python for numerical and scientific programming, most notably as the primary developer of the NumPy package and as a founding contributor of the SciPy package, since 1997. He is also the author of the definitive Guide to NumPy.

As CEO of Continuum Analytics, Travis engages customers in all industries, develops business strategy, and helps guide technical direction of the company. He actively contributes to software development and engages with the wider open source community in the Python ecosystem. He has served as a director of the Python Software Foundation and as a director of NumFOCUS.

Kristopher Overholt received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Kristopher has 10+ years of experience in areas including applied research, scientific computing, system administration, open-source software development, and computational modeling.

John has over 20 years experience in software development, machinery diagnostics, controls and thermodynamic performance. Throughout his career he has enjoyed developing engineering and analytics tools used by thousands of users. Currently he is responsible for overseeing development of anomaly detection, diagnostic and prognostic algorithms for power generation equipment using a combination of physics-based and data driven approaches. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Washington focusing on machine learning and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Over the years, Dharhas, has coded in a progression of languages including BASIC, Pascal, C, C++, Fortran, Perl, Matlab and a smattering of Javascript. For the past 8 years, Python has been his primary tool of choice to solve problems in computational modeling, data informatics and geospatial analysis. His career has encompassed both state and federal government and he has lead multidisciplinary, multiagency teams that use both open and proprietary tools. Dharhas holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin as well as a Bachelors in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He loves photography, reading, hiking and teaching his daughters to love science.

Morgan has over 20 years of experience as an trader, portfolio manager, executive and entrepreneur in the financial services industry. His current role is CEO of FinTech start-up CloudQuant, a cloud-based investment strategy research tool and as Head of Global Systematic Trading, for Kershner Trading Group. Prior to that he has built quantitative trading businesses at some of the world's largest Hedge Funds and Investment Banks over the last 20 years. Previously he was Global Head of Equity Trading at Allston Trading, a major HFT firm, Portfolio Manager in HFT at Citadel, Global Head of Trading at Penson Financial, Portfolio Manager at Carlson Capital, a multi-strategy hedge fund, and Head of Statistical Arbitrage at Merrill Lynch. Morgan's interest are in Prediction, Machine Learning, High Frequency Trading, Autonomous Market Making and more recently application of Deep Learning to quantitative trading. Morgan earned a BS and MS in Materials Science and Engineering with a concentration in Finance from MIT.

Bryan Smith joined Rocket Software in 2011 and manages all aspects of Rocket’s R&D organization and operations. Bryan has over 20 years of experience in software development. Prior to joining Rocket, Bryan was an IBM Distinguished Engineer in the Information Management division of the IBM Software Group, where he held various engineering, management, and customer-facing roles. He served as a division technical intellectual property lead, represented IBM on the Transaction Processing Council (TPC benchmarks), published numerous articles in information management publications, and was appointed an Association for Computing Machinery Distinguished Engineer in 2009. Bryan holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from the California State University, at Pomona and Chico.

Andrew Therriault

Andrew Therriault

Andrew joined the City of Boston as its first Chief Data Officer in 2016 after serving as Director of Data Science for the Democratic National Committee. He is a co-author in the recently published O'Reilly book "Data and Democracy" and completed a PhD in Politics from NYU in 2011. Andrew leads Boston’s Citywide Analytics Team, a group that has led the way nationally in using data science to improve city operations and make progress in critical areas such as homelessness, education, traffic safety and addiction.

Jake VanderPlas is the Director of Research in Physical Sciences for the University of Washington eScience Institute, and comes from a background of machine learning and data-intensive astronomy and astrophysics. His PhD research focused on the computational aspects of weak gravitational lensing. Along with his astronomy and computing research, Jake is interested in encouraging open and reproducible research practices across scientific disciplines. To this end, he has been very active in the world of open source Python. He is a core maintainer or regular contributor to several well-known Python projects, including Scikit-learn, Scipy, Matplotlib, and IPython. He has authored several packages focused on promoting open and reproducible science, including astroML, scidbpy, mpld3, and has co-authored books on the subject of Data Science with Python.

Bryan Van De Ven

Bryan received undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from UT Austin, and a Master's degree in physics from UCLA. He has worked at the Applied Research Labs, developing software for sonar feature detection and classification systems on US Naval submarine platforms. He also spent time at Enthought, where he worked on problems in financial risk modeling and fluid mixing simulation, and also contributed to the Chaco visualization library. He has also worked on an assortment of iOS projects as an independent consultant.

Bryan is currently creating an online course on Interactive Data Visualization with Bokeh together with DataCamp, an interactive platform to learn Python for Data Science.

Mythili is an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member and is the z Systems Architecture and Technology Lead for Analytics. Mythili has been with IBM for over 26 years, all in the mainframe environment working with clients in various capacities. Her focus areas have been diverse and include: analytics, industry solutions, business resilience architecture and design, availability management, systems design, and solution prototyping. Most recently, Mythili has been working with z Systems clients, IBM colleagues, business partners and the broader ecosystem to enable the integration of analytics with transaction and data environments leveraging capabilities such as Apache Spark and Anaconda.

Peter Wang

Peter has been developing commercial scientific computing and visualization software for over 15 years and currently serves as the co-founder and CTO of Continuum Analytics. At Continuum, Peter primarily works on product engineering and software architecture for Bokeh, Blaze and the Anaconda platform. As a creator of the PyData conference, he devotes time and energy to growing the Python data community, and advocating and teaching Python at conferences worldwide.
